The Dumb Waiter, by Harold Pinter

Noordhaus presents The Dumb Waiter, by Harold Pinter

In a Birmingham basement, 2 hit men patiently await their next assignment. Ben and Gus only have each other for company and an uncertain task ahead of them. Filling the time should be easy enough, with casual conversation and reminiscing about previous jobs… until the dumb waiter at the back of the room starts moving.

The Dumb Waiter is a one-act, absurd and tragic-comic play written by British playwright Harold Pinter in 1957. Showcasing a comedy of menace specific to Pinter’s early works, the play has a different approach and dramatic style than the absurdist works we have produced until now.

who’s Ben

Played by Oisín Moyne. A calm, authoritative, and cryptic figure. He is an older, experienced hitman who looks composed, but exhudes a sense of mystery. Ben is sometimes condescending, and often speaks in riddles, maintaining an air of power over his colleague Gus.

Best known as director of “Waiting for Godot” (2023), Oisín Moyne’s theater making endeavors see him fit as a stage and voice actor, as well as in management positions within several theater groups in the past decade, culminating in the co-foundation of Noordhaus.

who’s Gus

Gus is nervous, confused, and uncertain about the job and the strange situation he and his colleague find themselves in. His vulnerability and questioning nature contrast with Ben’s composure, highlighting a power imbalance between them.

Prolific and ubiquitous in both English and Dutch speaking theater groups in Groningen, Ivan Pickman’s bold stage presence has been bringing him main roles one after the other. With Gus, he furthers his absurdist streak after having been Hamm in Samuel Beckett’s “Endgame”.
